Welcome to my site and I hope you enjoy viewing some of the knives I have made. I’ve been told this is the page where I am supposed to familiarize you with what I offer and tell you a little about myself.
I was raised as an Army brat so I have lived and traveled all over the world. I have had the privilege of meeting a lot of great people and seeing a lot of the world. I finally landed here in Oklahoma after graduating high school and currently live near Oklahoma City. I have lived in Oklahoma for more than 20 years now and I suppose you could say I've set down roots here. Although I still enjoy traveling when I can.
I very much enjoy motorcycle riding and have traveled most of the continental United States and part of Canada. I don't get to travel by motorcycle as much as I was able to before kids, but I still ride about 20,000 miles a year.
I have enjoyed hunting, fishing, and camping since I was very young. I have used many knives over the years and I have found knives that work, and I have used many that did not. I try to incorporate the things that I have found that work well.
As with most knife makers I have been interested in knives since I was a child. That interest has never waned. For awhile I dabbled with adding handles to pre-made knife blanks. Then I tried grinding out some pretty crude pieces of sharpened steel. I met a knifemaker by the name of George Englebretson who taught me an awful lot about making knives. I just wish he had lived long enough for me to have learned more. I have been fortunate enough to have gotten to know many great makers who have all been extremely generous with their knowledge. I have been able to learn a few things from Mike Miller, Rick Menefee, Don Parish, Newt Livesay and Ray Kirk to name a few. I extend a sincere thank you to everyone who has helped me along the way and I am still learning and trying to improve.
Currently I make my knives by stock removal and all of my knives are made by me, in my shop. I do my own grinding and my own heat-treating. My preferred steels are D2 and 154CM. I find that these two steels will do nearly anything I need them to and they work well for the vast majority of tasks. I also use some Damascus when the knife design calls for it. I prefer to work with natural materials such as wood, stag, and sometimes ivory. I do use synthetics such as micarta and G10 if the knife design is one that will see heavy use where this material would be a better choice.
I have recently begun to do a little bit of forging with high carbon steels. The pieces that I make when forging have a very different personality than my stock removal knives. I have found that I very much enjoy the physical involvement with forging a knife.
I enjoy making everything from practical hunting and outdoors knives to tactical, hard use knives for military and law enforcement. Also, from time to time, I do something a bit more artistic in nature but primarily my knives are meant to be used and to serve the owner well.
I have also attended several knife combative schools such as James Keating’s renowned Riddle Of Steel and several other schools throughout the central US. I have had the privilege of being a member of specialized law enforcement teams where hard use knives were carried and used.. I have designed and built knives in use by our military around the world as well as for law enforcement units. I understand the need for well-built, hard use knives that won't let you down when you need them.
If I can help you create that one of a kind knife you have always wanted, or if it is just a simple hunting knife that you know will work when you need it to, please don’t hesitate to contact me and I will do what I can to help you. Also feel free to contact me if you just have a question about my knives or the processes I use to create them.
Thank you for visiting my site,
Shawn Shropshire
